How do you replace a broken window?

Replacing broken windows is one of the most common home improvement tasks. Repairing damage to glass within your home is the task. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Second step: Clean the new glass

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Reattach the window panels to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the windows until they are all assembled. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

Inspect the area around the hole when installing new glass to see if any repairs are required. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. You can find silicone caulking in hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
