How do you replace a broken window?
One of the most popular home improvement projects is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repairs should take about 30 minutes in this situation. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.
First, take the old glasses out of their frames
First, take out all the screws that are holding the glass in place. Then undo the lock at the top center of the bottom section of the window frame. Next, raise the window so it isn't attached to the sillplate (the metal strip below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Clean the panes thoroughly after they are taken out.
Second step: Clean your new glass
To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.
Third Step: Reinstall new glass
Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane into the opening of the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.
Fourth Step: Repair the affected area
When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. Inspect the area around the window for cracks near the corners. If so, add two small pieces wood to each side. These wooden blocks will strengthen the window while acting as spacers for the glass during expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing.
Fourth step: Sealing the area
After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create an excellent seal between the glass & the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.
Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
