How To

How do I replace a damaged window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, lift the window upwards so it isn’t attached to sill plates (the metal bars below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes have been removed, you should clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean your new glass

Use a dry paper towel or cloth to remove any dirt from the glass. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Start by pushing down on the lower edge of the outermost pane with the tip of a screwdriver. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth step: Repair the damage

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass has been replaced, apply a bead of silicone caulking to the perimeter edges of the window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can purchase silicone caulking at hardware stores or online. Choose a color that matches your walls.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
