FAQ

Which is better: contracting, or being a handyman.

Being a handyman requires fewer resources than contracting, as you only need yourself and tools. While contractors often rely on subcontractors, handymen must be able and willing to manage their own work schedules.

Does a handyman make suggestions about how to improve my home?

Absolutely! In fact, a handyman is trained in all areas of home repair and maintenance. He or she is trained in what repairs are needed and what does not. Don't be afraid to ask for help whenever you need it.

How can I find a reliable handyman?

Before hiring a handyman, you should always verify references. Ask friends and family members who have used him or her in the past. You can also look online for handymen's reviews.

Should I pay a handyman by the hour or per-project basis?

Personal preference will dictate the final price. To know the exact cost of a handyman's services, some prefer to pay by the hour. Some prefer to pay per completed job, as they might be working on multiple projects simultaneously. Either way works fine.

What happens to me if a handyman causes damages and I am unhappy with his work.

Notify him immediately if something goes wrong with the project. It is best to take photos and write down the details. Then contact your insurance company and file a claim.

Where did handymen originate?

There are thousands and thousands of handymen throughout the U.S. But almost none of them started their career as contractors. Many started out as tradesmen, learning the skills through apprenticeships. This means that they are often highly skilled and have a lot of knowledge. They can be valuable assets to any company.

What's the difference between a handyman or a carpenter, you ask?

You can hire a handyman for many projects including plumbing, electrical installation and drywall repair. Carpenters specialize in woodworking. Carpenters can construct cabinets, doors, windows and stairs.

How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

The most common home improvement task is to replace broken windows. The task consists of repairing damage caused to the glass inside your house. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. The problem is that you might end up with further damage to your home if the glass pane breaks. This article provides tips for how to replace broken windows.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, pull the window up slightly so it's no longer attached to the sill plate (the metal bar below the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. After the panes are taken off, thoroughly clean them.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

To remove dirt and grime from the glass' surface, use a paper towel or dry cloth. If debris is stuck under the glass, try cleaning it with a spray bottle filled with water and rubbing alcohol.

Third Step: Reinstall the replacement glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. Next, insert the next pane by pressing it against the first pane. Continue to insert the panes until you have assembled the whole window. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth Step: Repair the affected area

If you are installing new glass, be sure to inspect the area where the break occurred. This will help determine if further repairs are necessary. Install two pieces of small wood on each side of any hole if the break was near the corner. These wooden blocks will provide strength for the window, as well as acting as spacers during the expansion or contraction of the weatherproofing.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass has had to be replaced, apply silicone caulking at the perimeter edges. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking can be purchased at hardware stores and online. Be sure to choose a color that matches the existing paint on the walls.

Let the caulking dry overnight. The caulking should be left to harden completely before you disturb it. If you don't wait enough, the caulking could crack when you take it off.
