FAQ

Are handymen insured?

Yes! Yes. Insurance companies usually cover liability claims of up to $1,000,000 for bodily injury or property damage. Your insurance company will usually compensate you for any damages that occur during the project.

Should I pay a handyman by the hour or per-project basis?

It comes down to personal preference. Some prefer to pay per hour so they can see the actual cost of their handyman. Others prefer to be paid for each job completed, since they may need multiple jobs at the same time. It doesn't matter which way you go, it works great.

Do I need a handyman trained to do my work

No. Handymen already have the skills and knowledge to complete any job. All you need to do is give them the materials to complete the job.

Is it worth spending extra money on professional handyman service?

It depends entirely on the project. If you need a complex construction project like an office renovation, then a professional handyman service would definitely be beneficial.

Which is more difficult: being a contractor or a handyman.

Because you only need tools and yourself, being a handyman is more time-consuming than contracting. It is important that you are able to manage your workload and work schedule. Contractors often rely heavily on subcontractors.

How do I replace a cracked window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. In this case, the repair work should only take around 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article provides some tips on replacing a broken window.

Step one: Get rid of the old glass from the frame

To remove the old windowpane, you will first need to take out the screws that held it in place. Next, remove the lock at the top of the lower section of your window frame. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Next, remove any remaining screws using a pry instrument until they are loosen. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Second step: Clean and polish the new glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Third Step: Reinstall new glass

Attach the window frames to the panes. With the tip of a screwdriver, push down on the bottom edge of the outermost window pane. Gently push your pane back into its opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting panes until all windows are assembled. Seal the area where the panes meet with silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair the damaged area

Before installing the new glass, make sure to inspect the area around any cracks. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will be strong and can also act as spacers, keeping the glass in its place during expansion and contract of the weatherproofing.

Fifth step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. You should choose a color to match the wall paint.

Allow the caulking to cure overnight. You should not disturb the caulking after it has fully hardened. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
