How To

How do I replace a cracked window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This involves fixing any damage caused by the glass. Repair work in this instance should take no more than 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article will give you some helpful tips for replacing broken windows.

First step: Take the glass out of its frame

First, remove all screws that hold the glass in place. The lock located at the top middle of the bottom portion of the window frame must be undone. Next, lift the window slightly up so that it is no longer attached the sill plate (the steel bar at the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. Once the panes are removed, clean them thoroughly.

Next step: Clean the glass

Use a dry towel or paper towel to clean the glass. Use a spray bottle with water and alcohol to clean any debris that has gotten under the glass.

The third step is to reinstall the glass

Attach the window panes to the frames. Use a screwdriver to push the outermost edge of your pane down. Gently push the pane back into the opening in the frame. Then move to the next pane, pushing it firmly against the previous pane before reattaching it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. To seal the area where the panes meet, use a silicone caulk gun.

Fourth step: Repair any damage.

When installing the new glass, inspect the area around the hole to determine whether any additional repairs are needed. If the break occurred near the corner of the window, install two small pieces of wood along each side of the hole. These wooden blocks will add strength to the window while also acting as spacers to keep the glass in place during the expansion and contraction of the weatherproofing material.

Fourth step: Sealing the area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a strong seal between glass and surrounding wallboard. You can buy silicone caulking online or at hardware shops. It is important to match the color of the walls with silicone caulking.

Allow the caulking time to dry overnight. Do not disturb the caulking until it has hardened completely. You could crack the caulking if you wait too long.
