How To

How do you replace a broken window?

Repairing broken windows is one the most common home improvement jobs. This task involves repairing any damage to your glass. This repair will take only 30 minutes. But if you do not know how to replace a broken pane of glass, then you risk causing further damage to the house. This article offers some useful tips to replace a broken window.

First step: Remove the old glass from its frame

To take out the old glass, first remove the screws that hold it in place. Next, undo the lock in the middle of the bottom section. Next, move the window up slightly to remove it from the sill plate (the bar that runs below the floor). Use a pry to loosen any remaining screws. After the panes have been removed from the window, clean them well.

Step 2: Clean the new glasses

You can wipe any dirt off the glass surface with a towel or a dry cloth. You can clean the glass with a spray bottle containing water and rubbing alcohol if there is any debris underneath.

Step 3: Install the new glass

Then, attach the window panes back into the frames. Begin by gently pressing down on one end of the outermost panel with the tip a screwdriver. Gently push back the pane into place in the opening. After moving to the next one, push it firmly against your previous one before you reattach it. Continue inserting the panes till the window is complete. Use a silicone caulk gun to seal the space where the panes meet.

Fourth Step: Repair the area damaged

To determine if additional repairs are necessary, inspect the area surrounding the hole before installing the glass. In the event that the hole is located near the corner of your window, place two small pieces on either side of it. These wooden blocks will give strength to the window and act as spacers between the glass and the weatherproofing material.

Fifth Step: Seal the repaired area

After the glass is replaced, apply silicone caulking to all edges of your window frame. This will create a good seal between the glass and the surrounding wallboard. Silicone caulking is available at hardware stores as well as online. Make sure you choose a color that is consistent with the wall's existing paint.

Let the caulking dry overnight. After the caulking has dried completely, do not disturb it. You may crack the caulking by not waiting long enough.
